In memoriam

Professor Stanisław Kaczanowski, an authority in the field of automation and robotics, a long-standing director of the Industrial Institute of Automation and Measurements PIAP associated with the institute until the end, passed away on 29 December 2022. 

 

Born on 5 January 1940, Professor Stanisław Kaczanowski obtained his MSc degree in mechanical engineering from the Faculty of Precision Mechanics of the Warsaw University of Technology in 1963, and his doctoral degree in technical sciences in 1969.

During his work at the Industrial Institute of Automation and Measurements PIAP, which began in 1971, he took up the post of assistant professor (1973) and then associate professor (2010). He held a number of management positions at the institute, including scientific secretary (1986-1990), director (1990-2005) and deputy director for research and development (2005-2020). As a director, he carried out a profound restructuring of the institute, adapting it to operate in a market economy with limited budgetary funding. As a result, the institute achieved a high scientific, technical and market ranking. 

From 2007 to 2011, Professor Stanisław Kaczanowski was a member of the General Council of Research and Development Units and, since 1984, a member of the Committee on Automation and Robotics of the Polish Academy of  Sciences. He was a member of scientific and programme committees of dozens of scientific and technical conferences, including the Automation conferences. He managed scientific and technical programmes and numerous research and development works for industrial customers. He was also a promoter and reviewer of doctoral theses. He is the author of several patents and author or co-author of dozens of publications in the field of automation and robotics, including monographs.

He repeatedly received awards and distinctions for his work, including the awards of the Rectors of the Warsaw University of Technology and the Silesian University of Technology, the Scientific Secretary of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Minister of Machinery Industry, congratulatory letters from the President of the Republic of Poland and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
